Golf Betting: Haas the outside chance at Wells
Betfair's golf In-Former Mark Allen gives you his rundown on the Wells Fargo Championship.
The Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow is turning into one of the flagship events on the US Tour. Just have a look at some of the names in the field: Tiger, Phil, Rory, Lee Westwood, Hunter Mahan & plenty of others looking to sharpen up their games for The Players Championship next week.
Quail Hollow Golf Club is a beauty. The USGA is looking to hold a US Open at this magnificent test in the next ten years. And that's why the honour role of former champions at this venue are all world class names and ball strikers. US Open winners Lucas Glover and Rory McIlroy won in 2011 & 2010. Before that Sean O'Hair, Anthony Kim, Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk & VJ Singh held the trophy aloft at the end of the week.
So let's talk business.
Tiger will struggle to win here - I'm not saying he won't - but it's a heavily wooded and sometimes tight golf course and he'll have to bring his best game all 4 days. But he's sitting at $11 at the moment and that is the best value I've seen him at when his game is almost there. Put a little saver on him @$11 just in case. Don't lay him unless you can get $6 before Thursdays hit off. $6 is worth the risk. Reassess after round 2.
Phil Mickelson has finished worse than 12th only once in his eight appearances but I don't see him winning here at a US Open style golf course. Phil tapers his golf to peak at the majors these days and after the Masters he's had a break. His swing usually needs a couple weeks to get in the grove and I'm sure this is just a warm up week for Phil with the Players coming up. He's currently at $13 to lay and that suits me just fine. Won't win here.
There is some real value with Jason Day at $60. His form suggests that $60 is about right, but I think if Jason gets off to a decent start on Thursday, this is the type of course and tournament where he wins. Should be $30 for mine. He's value at $60!!
Bill Haas is a gun. Hits the ball long and very straight and is born to play courses like this. He won the Fed Ex Cup last year and the Tour Championship to pocket well over US$11,000,000 for the week. He's uses the belly putter - read cheat stick - and finished 4th here last year. He's sitting at an unbelievable $48 - should be $20 - and is my pick of the week by a mile.
