Olympics Betting: Keep an eye on Hooker
The Puntathlete was there, like most of us, yelling at his TV for Sally to get home and win the gold, and will happily do the same for Steve Hooker who he hopes will challenge for Pole Vault gold at Olympics 2012.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S 200M FINALS
We've produced some brilliant results for Betfair punters over the last two days but I can't suggest any significant value bets in the men's and women's 200m finals.
Usain Bolt @ Betfair odds of (1.24) and Alison Felix @(1.15) are very short in betting but deserve their billing.
I can't make a case for Felix being beaten. She was awesome in her heat and displayed a mind-blowing burst of speed at the 100m mark that ended the race in four strides. It also allowed her to ease down and conserve energy for the final.
The only negative for Bolt is the potential for a lack of focus following his 100m victory.
Sure, which red-blooded man would resist the temptation to celebrate an Olympic gold medal with the Swedish women's Handball team?!!
Maybe I'm jealous...but I'm not sure that is the ideal preparation for such a highly-anticipated Olympic event.
By contrast, Yohan Blake looks highly focused and knows this is his chance to square the ledger with his Jamaican compatriot. There is certainly nothing wrong with his form and in any other era he'd be the dominant sprinter of his generation.
Bolt probably has enough in hand to hold Blake out, but I couldn't blame punters for asking the question @ Betfair odds of (5.20) for Blake.
Perhaps the value play in the men's race is the (2.48) for another Jamaican, Warren Weir, to run top three.
I have been taken by Weir's lead-up runs and Jamaica has never filled the trifecta in an Olympic 200m final.
This could be the year.
MEN'S POLE VAULT
We were overcome with patriotic pride watching Sally Pearson hurdle her way to gold and it would be foolish to dismiss the prospect of a similar scenario when Steve Hooker aims to defend his Beijing Pole Vault title.
Hooker's battles with form are public knowledge but his qualifying jump in the lead-up to London showed that all is not lost.
Some advice for punters on Betfair: keep a very close eye on how Hooker goes at his first vault of the competition, regardless of the height. If the West Australian soars over his first attempt, he will be filled with confidence, and of all field events, pole vault is a confidence sport.
The conditions here in London have been very difficult for field events. Swirling winds and rain have provided additional obstacles for the competitors.
To that end, I am laying the odds-on favourite Renaud Lavillenie @ Betfair odds of (1.94).
Lavillenie is only slightly built and I fancy he could struggle if the swirling winds continue. He's certainly not an odds-on shot, and we all know successful punting is about identifying value.
I can't tip Hooker from the outset but will happily back him if he nails an early attempt.
I think the early value is with Bjorn Otto (7.40) who cleared 5.92m at the European Championships, and Malte Mohr (14.50), a bigger guy who brings good form into this competition.
This is a wide open Olympic pole vault competition but I am laying the favourite with some confidence.
