Jamie Dwyer is upset after his kit was lost in transit

"You get used to your stick,” said Jamie. “My stick is of a different size, it has got a certain weight, a certain grip."

Ed Hawkins tells us how the facilities in India resemble student digs and why Australia hockey star Jamie Dwyer is so upset at the moment...

Soiled bathrooms, a smashed up kitchen and animal footprints on the bed. Sounds like the aftermath of a good night out to most. The Commonwealth Games, despite employing cleaning teams with the scruples of fresher students, is about to get under-way.

The opening ceremony takes place on Sunday with promises of a 'spectacular'. That most definitely caught the attention because what has gone before has already been pretty impressive. How will they manage to cap a collapsing bridge and widespread flooding? Is the Lord himself going to show up to for another display of wrath?

It will probably just be fireworks and one of those hugely-complicated choreographed human mural displays. 'Oh look, a thousand coloured-clad chaps have moved into position to create the flag of Malaysia'. Great for the television shots from the top of the stadium or if you are a bird, but not so good if you are in seat 34, row c. It looks like a large queue for a fashion outlet.

There have been more dramas in Delhi. The media centre canteen opened nine days late, which seems an extraordinary trick given the appetite for running these Games down. Then came the most shocking of all. 'Australian hockey star Jamie Dwyer's preparations are in complete disarray after his kit was lost'. See what happens if you don't feed the media?

"You get used to your stick," said Jamie. "My stick is of a different size, it has got a certain weight, a certain grip." Amen to that, men everywhere muttered.

Still, Jamie's stick worries have not stopped punters installing Australia as [1.21] jollies to win the gold medal. Okay, it's an immature market but the Aussies have won all three gold medals since hockey was introduced to the Games in 1998.

India are [3.00] and have never won a medal while England, World Cup semi-finalists, are [2.00]. New Zealand are [3.00] and have nicknamed themselves the Black Sticks. Keep it to yourself, fellas.
