Dragons finish ahead

The Dragons took the minor premiership after thrashing the Eels 37-0 at WIN Jubilee Oval, writes Andy Morris.


It was a perfect end to the home and away season for the Dragons, who needed to beat the Eels and hope the Tigers beat the Bulldogs.


They secured the minor premiership on superior points differential as they ended the Eels match-winning streak at seven.


Brett Morris scored three tries to go ahead of Tigers winger Taniela Tuiaki at the top of the NRL tryscorers list with 22.


The Knights secured the last finals position after beating Penrith 35-0 at EnergyAustralia Stadium.


But their win came at a cost, with hooker Isaac De Gois being carried off with a knee injury.


The Knights scored after just five minutes through Kurt Gidley, who added his second early in the second half.


The Broncos beat the Raiders 22-10 at Suncorp Stadium, to book a finals showdown with the Titans at Skilled Park.


Brisbane only led by two points at the break, but Sam Thaiday, Jhaaral Yow Yeh and Corey Parker all went over in a 15 minute spell in the second half to help secure the victory.


It meant the Broncos earned their fifth successive win in front of a bumper crowd of 35,112.


The Sea Eagles beat the in-form Titans 38-4 at Brookvale Oval, turning round 22-0 ahead and adding three more tries in the second half.


Things got worse for the Titans with lock Ashley Harrison and utility Luke O'Dwyer both succukmbing to injuries.


David Williams scored two of the Sea Eagles' tries while Matt Orford kicked four conversions and a penalty goal.


The Roosters finished with the wooden spoon after losing 32-16 to the Cowboys at the Sydney Football Stadium.


Skipper Craig Fitzgibbon was unable to mark his last game before his move to England with a win, but the Roosters scored the first three tries of the game to suggest that they could end on a high note.


However, Johnathan Thurston went over for a try just before the break and the Cowboys added two more tries in an eight-minute period that put them ahead at 18-16.


Three more tries in the final nine minutes secured the competition points for North Queensland, while the Roosters took the wooden spoon courtesy of a worse points differential than the Sharks.


The Sharks were beaten 26-14 by the Rabbitohs at Toyota Stadium, with Scott Geddes' late try the difference between the two sides.


The Sharks had taken an early lead through Luke Douglas' try, but the game see-sawed after that.


The Wests Tigers helped deny the Bulldogs the minor premiership when they beat them 34-12 at the Sydney Football Stadium.


The Tigers led 16-0 at half time and only two consolation tries from the Bulldogs prevented a humiliation.


The Tigers had six different scorers, while Benji Marshall kicked five conversions.


The Storm thrashed the Warriors on home soil, sending Stacey Jones out on a low note at Mt Smart Stadium.


Melbourne won 30-0, with Will Chambers scoring two of their tries and Cameron Smith kicking three conversions.
