The majority of rugby league fans are under no illusions in terms of NRL grand final betting this season- the basic equation comes down to which team will challenge the mighty Melbourne Storm come the season decider.
The Storm are clear favourites in the Betfair NRL premiership market (currently 1.88 to back) and recent form suggests the smart money is headed in the right direction.
With a playing list including names such as Inglis, Slater, Folau, Smith, Kronk, Crocker, Johnson and more at his disposal, coach Craig Bellamy has his troops firing and will be satisfied with nothing less than another premiership.
Below we will take a look at the main contenders to the Storm:
MANLY SEA EAGLES (6.4 to back): Finished runner-up last year, a clear second favourite in 2008. Des Hassler's team have had another great year, the Sea Eagles have scored more points than any other team this season and have won more games by 13 points or more than any other team in the competition. The downside is the fact the Sea Eagles have lost both encounters with the Storm this season, the last match-up resulting in a 10-16 loss for Manly. The imminent retirement of club legend Steve Menzies may provide just the impetus the Sea Eagles need.
BRISBANE BRONCOS (10 to back): It would take a brave man to write-off the premiership chances of the Broncos. The Queenslanders have done it all before and that finals experience will prove crucial when push comes to shove. Another factor to consider is the fact season 2008 marks the end of the Wayne Bennett era (who is headed to the Dragons next season) - a premiership would be a fitting way to send the coaching guru off.
SYDNEY ROOSTERS (15.5 to back): Having started the season in great form, the Roosters have struggled of late (losing 5 of their past 8 games) but a wealth of talent on the playing list suggests it's only a matter of time before the tri-colours regain that winning edge. The Roosters boast a big, tough forward pack and skilled halves and backs and can match it with any team on their day. They also boast a 1-1 win-loss record against both the Storm and the Sea Eagles in 2008.
BEST OF THE REST:
Currently sitting in 5th place premiership betting, the Cronulla Sharks (14.5 to back) have had a very consistent year on the pitch but off-field issues may prove costly as the roster season draws to an end. The Dragons (17 to back) have shown glimpses of brilliance this season and could pose a real threat if they can get their all their best players on the ground at the one time. And finally, the Canberra Raiders (50 to back) have been sensational over recent weeks despite off field controversy and a huge injury list- and if the Green machine can maintain this late season momentum they may well surprise a few.
