Lewis Hamilton only just snatched pole position at Monza from the Force India of Adrian Sutil, who is sharing the front row with him after a career-best qualifying, writes Marissa van Uden.

However, Sutil's Force India, the only non-KERS car in the top four, could have had pole position if not for a slight mistake in his final qualifying lap. Vitantonio Liuzzi in the other Force India, starts from P7, which is also a career-best. Even without the KERS booster system off the line, both of these newly competitive cars have a decent chance of holding onto good positions at this fast and bumpy circuit.

Between the Force Indias are Kimi Räikkönen's Ferrari (P3), Heikki Kovalainen's McLaren (P4), and the two Brawns, with Barrichello in P5 and Button in P6. These positions are no mean feat for the Brawn drivers. They went out with heavy fuel loads and both drivers are set to run on one-stop strategies tomorrow. This means they are the cars to watch. They are challenging for the podium and either driver could break the Monza tradition and win from a starting position behind the front row.

Fernando Alonso's Renault starts from P8. Renault, who are currently dealing with accusations of race-fixing by their former driver Nelson Piquet, have decided to use the KERS system again for Monza. Alonso's team mate Romain Grosjean will start from P12, behind the Toyota of Jarno Trulli in P11.

The Red Bulls make up the final two cars in the top ten. Sebastian Vettel out-qualified Webber to start from P9. If these two have light fuel loads, they are not in a great position to attack any of the cars ahead of them.

Giancarlo Fisichella, who has left Force India just as they are unleashing their new, competitive cars, has taken his dream seat with Ferrari. But after a small accident in practice and an unmemorable qualifying, he is starting from P14. He is still getting used to his new Ferrari and the different balance under braking with the KERS system.

BMW Sauber are shaking their heads as they leave qualifying with a double engine failure, resulting in a P13 for Robert Kubica and P15 for Nick Heidfeld. They are ahead of the Williams at least, whose aerodynamic packages could not perform at this low-down-force circuit. They had their worst qualifying of the season and will be starting behind Timo Glock's Toyota (P16) in P17 and P18.
