Mathew Thompson is on-board with Betfair punters who fancy Australia's Mark Webber to commence the 2011 Formula One season with an historic home victory at Albert Park this weekend.
The Red Bull driver has been backed from $6.50 to a current price of $5.20 by exchange players, who consider Webber a live chance of becoming the first Australian to win his home grand prix since Alan Jones in 1980.
While Webber's campaign will be bolstered by the punters' optimism, he still trails reigning World Champion and race favourite Sebastian Vettel at $3.45.
Splitting the Red Bull pair in the market is Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who's also firmed from $5.30 into $4.50.
Alonso has been all the rage among punters on the 2011 World Drivers Champion. The Spaniard was trading at $4.30 a fortnight ago but has been the subject of heavy support in the lead-up to the season opener to currently sit at $3.80.
Vettel remains favourite to defend his title at $3.40 while another former winner, Lewis Hamilton, occupies the third line of the Betfair market at $9.20.
Mark Webber has firmed from a top price of $16.50 to a current quote of $10.50.
Betfair punters believe Red Bull ($2.18) and Ferrari ($3.65) are the only legitimate contenders for the constructors' championship.
