The Edward Manifold Stakes is so often a good guide to the 1000 Guineas (Gallica taking out the double 12 months ago) and this year's winner Majestic Music did look impressive, writes Kristen Manning.
The stable won this race two years ago with Serious Speed and look a top chance to add another trophy to their cabinet.
Fomalite proved no match for Majestic Music at Flemington but she tried hard and she strips all the fitter. An honest type shaping well, she can run another bold race here.
The Guineas Prelude - previously known as the Tranquil Star - has not been quite as strong a guide over recent years although Miss Finland won both races in 2006. The race does however provide this year's favourite Irish Lights.
Only second up when she won in easy style, she looks nicely primed for this. Jockey Glen Boss rates her highly and he sure knows how to win a big race!
Jolie Brise, My Emotion and Music In The Park ran the trifecta in another lead up race and all three look promising. The former won in easy style and looks ready for the 1600m. The runner up meanwhile had 59kg and meets her conqueror 6kg better at the weights.
Music In The Park drew badly that day and did a bit of work - the trouble here being is that she has drawn even more awkwardly in barrier 14.
The Sydney form must also be looked at here, Melito proving no match for More Joyous at her last couple but still racing very well. She struck slow going last time and seems better on top of the ground.
That was the Flight Stakes, a race in which the well related Sister Madly - a half sister to the Hong Kong superstar Silent Witness - also fared nicely. Lightly raced she still has plenty of scope for improvement and seems to be peaking at just the right time.
Whilst Irish Lights is quite short in the betting, this does look an even race. If the favourite happens to get beaten - as was the case in the Caulfield Guineas last Saturday - there is value. Sister Madly looks a top chance whilst Fomalite is the each-way roughie.
Also rising in grade is Sense Of Sun in the fifth event but he is showing above average ability and his latest run without luck was outstanding. No surprise to see him measure up here and each-way odds.
And improvement can be expected from Flying Ruby in the mares race - the 1600m looks suitable and a new jockey, Brad Rawiller, is being tried.
