RACE-BY-RACE CROWN OAKS DAY REVIEW BY BRAD THOMPSON

It was an action packed third day at the VRC Spring Carnival with the upholding of a controversial protest and some tight results. But it was the legendary trainer Bart Cummings who was again to the fore, securing a record ninth victory in the feature race courtesy of Faint Perfume.

The well tried Lord Pindari gave backers a huge sight leading for a long way and holding onto second. Grail Jeuney finished off nicely for third but was no match for the winner.

3.       Grail Jeuney
4.       Equable
Race 2
South Australian mare Very Discreet showcased her impressive ability winning the Listed Crown Promenade Stakes over 1100m. With Dwayne Dunn aboard and stalking Sydney visitor Seeking Attention, the David Jolly-trained Very Discreet proved too strong in the run to the line to notch up her third win from as many starts this campaign. Serinissima was well out of her ground early, but flashed home late to fill third placing, with Solchow fourth.

  4. Solchow

Race 3
The David Hayes-trained Azwa looked destined for victory before fading in the final 50m to be overtaken by Umatain with Blake Shinn aboard. Cassini Contest raced super finishing strongly for third at each-way odds after settling well back. He was taking significant ground off the first two in the closing 100m and can be followed with supreme confidence. Marheta was last rounding the bend and closed hard for fourth, and is another worth tracking.
1.       Umatain
2.       Azwa
3.       Cassini Contest
4.       Marheta
Race 4
The Sheikh Mohammed-owned filly Trim produced a devastating turn of foot over the 1200m to win the Electronic Stakes over 1200m despite a tardy beginning out of the gates. Once jockey Kerrin McEvoy navigated a passage through the field, daughter of Lohnro pounced on the gallant Marquardt in the dying stages. The Mark Kavanagh-trained filly Cinecitta ran credibly for third, and Husskila made ground on the fence to sneak into fourth.

2.       Marquardt
3.       Cinecitta
4.       Husskila
Race 5
Outlandish Lad was heavily supported late and always looked the winner courtesy of a beautiful ride from jockey Michael Rodd. The Mark Kavanagh-trained gelding enjoyed a more favourable ride on this occasion, having come undone in his past two at the hands of horrid runs. Translation stuck on well for second, and Go Forest Go bounded home late for third. No Jurisdiction found nothing after leading, and highly-fancied Boogaloo was disappointing. South Australian raider Sellers sustained a long run out wide to gain fourth.

Race 6
The Bart Cummings odds-on commodity Faint Perfume possessed a touch too much class for the promising runner-up Valdemoro. The first two home exude enormous staying potential and it will pay to follow them along their journey.  The favourite was strong to the line, but would have had backers hearts in their mouths at times. Savsbelle rounded out third impressively despite being well beaten and Well Rounded toughed it out into fourth. The first four are well worth following.
1.       Faint Perfume
2.       Valdemoro
3.       Savsbelle
4.       Well Rounded
Race 7
Viking Legend was first past the post, but there was always an inkling Michael Rodd (third past the post on King Diamond) would fire in a protest. It was subsequently upheld, relegating Viking Legend to third and promoting the Gai Waterhouse-trained topweight Turf Express to first. The first three all had genuine claims to win the race.
1.       Turf Express
2.       King Diamond
3.       Turf Express
4.       Excuse My French
Race 8
Slick Queensland visitor Burdekin Blues gave his rivals an absolute lesson over the 1200m in the Style Guide Stakes. Veteran jockey Shane Scriven forged to the front early on, and was never in any danger of being run down. The Barry Baldwin-trained sprinter is capable of being competitive in much harder races this campaign. Let Loushe ran well into second first-up, and the consistent Happy Glen ran gallantly into third. The winner was a class above.
1.       Burdekin Blues
2.       Let Loushe
3.       Happy Glen
4.       Ferocia
Race 9
Sadalbari and It's Prince fought out a thrilling finale to Oaks Day, with Sadalbari lunging at the line to take victory.  Race favourite Berringama was a shade disappointing labouring into fourth despite the advantage of having the run of the race. Ship in the Night slipped into third placing, but the first two past the post looked a class above.
1.       Sadalbari
2.       It's Prince
3.       Ship In The Night
4.       Berringama
