Bet Up on the Back Up

Adept in all conditions, this lightly raced son of Lonhro should relish the step up to 1600m.

Ben Asgari believes it will pay to follow two horses making their second appearance on Saturday at the Flemington Carnival.

Both Launay and Red Colossus will be making their second appearance at this year's four day Flemington Carnival, and both look difficult to beat on Saturday.

The Peter Snowden-trained Launay backs up after winning the last race on Melbourne Cup Day and lines up on Saturday in Race 2, the Masterfoods Condiments Handicap (1600m).

Adept in all conditions, this lightly raced son of Lonhro should relish the step up to 1600m. At his only previous try at the mile, Launay went forward and battled on strongly for a great second behind Rothesay in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas. There's certainly no Rothesay in this field and the main danger, the Anthony Cummings-trained Trader, has to lump 59kgs.

From barrier 11, Kerrin McKevoy might either roll forward to the lead or sit outside the top weight in a race that doesn't look to have a lot of speed. Launay should be able to then kick away from his rivals at the top of the straight and confirm his place as a horse to keep an eye on for the future.

Despite being a runner up in the Group 1 South Australian Derby earlier this year, Red Colossus was sent around at $151 in Saturday's Mackinnon Stakes.

While the odds on favourite So You Think did nothing to dent his reputation as Australia's premier race horse racing away to win by close to four lengths, Red Colossus certainly surprised a few of his doubters by running on gamely into fifth place, well ahead of many of his more fancied rivals.

Trainer Greg Eurell has always had a big opinion of Red Colossus which remarkably drops 2.5kg into Saturday's race after taking on the best Australia has to offer in the Mackinnon.

Drawn perfectly in barrier four, regular rider Chris Symons can choose to either go forward or back depending on the early pace.

The flexibility of this impressive son of Testa Rossa is further highlighted by his ability to handle all kinds of track conditions and back to open class he looks a second-to-none chance.
