I find a good approach is to back three or four starters, depending on field sizes. That way you can trade into a winning position on several of them during the race, with the ultimate aim of having a green set of numbers as they pass the post.

The spring carnival is over, but Aussie punters can find plenty of other opportunities to bet on quality racing, especially if they're prepared to stay up late.

With the spring carnival drawing to an end, Australian horse racing punters will be searching for quality events on which to ply their trade.

Of course, there's still plenty of local opportunities for punting on horses over the summer. A bookmaker once said to me that he made all his money during the winter months and during the spring carnival and he got belted over summer until the slow tracks arrived in May. There's got to be some sort of a leg-up for punters in a statement like that.

But the bookie in question is an old-school practitioner. He wouldn't know his Internet from his television. These days, punters are much more astute and have many more opportunities for value as well as a lot more information on which to base their bets. And with an exchange like Betfair, they can trade in and out of positions on a massive range of events.

Local punters in search of a great trading commodity could do worse than to stay up late and bet on the jumps season in the UK. In my view, Betfair was made for jumps racing (and tennis). The in-play trading opportunities are incredible. With races lasting four or five minutes, the volumes are phenomenal. You can get in and out of positions within seconds.

But, as always, it pays to back the right ones before the jump. I find a good approach is to back three or four starters, depending on field sizes. That way you can trade into a winning position on several of them during the race, with the ultimate aim of having a green set of numbers as they pass the post.

One warning: make sure you have a fast Internet connection while viewing an in-play market and that you are tuned in to Betfair radio. Even though the audio will be delayed by a few seconds, it helps give a solid indication of whether your runner/s are likely to be in the finish.
