Take the favourite in Cox Plate

The $3 million W.S Cox Plate - Australia's ultimate test of equine class. This Saturday 14 of Australia's best face the starter at 4.30 and until then opinions will rage - how has the best form? Who loves Moonee Valley the most? How will the race be run? writes Kristen Manning.

From barrier 11 natural front runner Sir Slick looks the likely pace maker. Whilst a high class animal - a 20 times winner of over $1.6 million, he doesn't seem to bring his best form to Melbourne, running tenth in the Crystal Mile on this day last year.

At the other end of the punting spectrum is worthy favourite Whobegotyou. The Caulfield (Yalumba) Stakes is so often a good guide for this race - being run perfectly timed at the same trip two weeks later - and this exciting galloper won that race in authoritative style.

The only small doubt over Whobegotyou's form is that he is yet to strike a truly outstanding galloper and be tested against that ilk.

But there doesn't seem to be any such stars here and a horse with his sort of weight-for-age lead up form most often wins the Cox Plate. In saying that only two horses have won the Feehan, Yalumba and the Plate - Northerly and Rising Fast.

One of the main dangers comes in the shape of one of Whobegotyou's regular rivals in Heart Of Dreams. He too boasts excellent lead up form but in the Yalumba was just no match. He did however beat that horse home in the Underwood at his previously outing and so far they have been fairly evenly matched.

Going on the most recent run though, it is hard to see Heart Of Dreams turning the tables - although of course luck in running plays a vital role and barrier three is a good gate.

In short, Whobegotyou might not provide the best of value, but looks the likely winner here.
