Run in honor of the founder of Moonee Valley, William Samuel Cox, it is Australia’s premier weight-for-age race over 2040m. This race was first run in 1922 and won by Violencello a stallion imported from England. Held between the Cualfield and Melbourne cups it is one of the premier races of Australia.

Ever since its inception, this race has attracted the very best of Australian turf. Names like Kingstown, Rising Fast, Dulcify, Gunsynd, Super Impose, Octagonal, Might and Power, Sunline, Phar Lap and recently Makyebe Diva, Maldivin, and Fields of Omagh have been etched on WX Cox wall of champions situated strategically in the Octagonal Lounge.
