The WS Cox Plate
Run in honour of the founder of Moonee Valley, William Samuel Cox, the Cox Plate is Australia’s premier weight-for-age race over 2040m. It was first run in 1922 and won by Violencello, a stallion imported from England, and is held in the period between the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
Since its inception, this race has attracted the very best of Australian turf. Names like Kingstown, Rising Fast, Dulcify, Gunsynd, Super Impose, Octagonal, Might and Power, Sunline, Phar Lap and recently, Makybe Diva, Maldivian, and Fields of Omagh, have been etched on the WS Cox ‘Wall of Champions’, situated strategically in the Octagonal Lounge.
