Four tips for a top Royal Ascot

Racing expert Graham Cunningham has four golden nuggets to make the five days of Ascot as successful as possible.

Do go for at least one day if you can. Granted, being away from the laptop reduces the betting edge, but there is nothing like Royal Ascot for atmosphere and sustained quality Flat racing.

Don't forget it pays to look beyond the obvious. The media tend to flag up just one or two horses as the star attractions, but the truth is that most of the big races have real depth with several high class horses trading at longer odds than they ought to.

Do be selective. Far better to focus on races where you feel there is a clear edge than to get sucked into having a bet in an incredibly tough handicap just for the sake of it.

Don't forget Ascot's new straight course can come with significant pace and ground biases. Much depends on the weather and how the jockeys react. However, my own view is that a pitch near the stand rail is seldom a hindrance and often a major plus.
