Some $60,000 is up for grabs in the Lawsons Underwriting Australasia Celebrity Sprint at Gloucester Park on Friday night, and it has attracted some high calibre New Zealand-bred speedsters, writes Andy Morris.
Two in particular will grab the attentions of punters, as the barrier draw has been kind to Im Themightyquinn and fellow Kiwi raider Sneakyn Down Under.
Im Themightyquinn won the Framantle Cup last Friday night over 2902m, so will hope to keep that form going as he drops down to the 1730m sprint.
Superb early speed
Both that horse and Sneakyn Down Under have excellent early speed, and the likelihood is it will be between the two Kiwi-trained entrants and West Australian-bred Has The Answers in the early stages.
Im Themightyquinn has the no 1 position, while the youngest reinsman in the race, Morgan Woodley (21) will have his eye on getting to the front from barrier two.
He came out fast five starts ago from barrier three in the Parliamentarians Cup and burst past Dartmoor to take up the running after 200m, showing that he can lead from the front.
Coming from wide
He has had to come from wide to win his last two outings, starting from no. 9 last Friday and barrier eight a week earlier.
Sneakyn Down Under showed promise in finishing third behind Hayton Brain and Mr Yankee in the Celebrity Sprint last New Year's Eve, when Im The mightyquinn was just one place further back.
Sneakyn Down Under was last at the bell last Friday night but stormed back into contention and finished fourth behind Has The Answers. He has won six times over 1730m so will have plenty of backers.
Tough draw for Aliveandwell
Barrier six is the only impediment to Aliveandwell's chances, but the horse is unbeaten at seven starts in sprints in Western Australia so must be considered.
Talk To Me Courage is a stablemate of Im Themightyquinn and will start from barrier four in his first outing in two months.
