Mantra Lad is on target to break the 530 metre track record at Cannington on Saturday night when he jumps from box 5 in the Final of the Sky Channel Perth Cup (G1).
Qualifying in the fastest time of 29.95 Mantra Lad goes into the final unbeaten at Cannington in two starts. The all-rounder has notched victories in the National Distance Final and Sandown Shootout and connections might be half inclined to set him for the Great Eastern Steeplechase!
Mantra Lad is a red/fawn son of Pure Octane out of Al Fresco and was whelped in July 2006. Owned by Martin and Fiona Hallinan and trained by Graeme Jose his career record reads 30 starts for 13 wins, 6 seconds and 2 thirds for $168,485 in prizemoney.
His only stumbling block could be local bitch Miss Slick. No greyhound knows Cannington better than Miss Slick whose 24 career wins are all on the Cannington circuit. She'll carry the hopes of many fans at the track on Saturday night and will certainly be something for Mantra Lad to chase from her box 2 draw.
The $140,000 to the winner Perth Cup will be run in the west at 9.17 p.m.
The other feature of the night is the Galaxy for stayers. Vintage Octane has drawn the cherry and he looks a good thing. In fact this looks an ideal time to go the 'all-up' Vintage Octane into Mantra Lad in the Cup.
The Cup consolations are terrific supports and Velocette can bounce back with a win in the first consolation at 7.50 p.m.
