The Flat season at Windsor gets underway today
"Avonmore Star’s standout effort in 2011 came on his reappearance, and if he could reproduce that form today then he’d take the world of beating off a mark of 77."
Timeform's Free Form Site brings you the hottest tips on UK horse racing (April 16).
Mike Murphy's stable has been in pretty good form over the last month or so and today he brings a couple of horses back from breaks. Stable stalwart Benandonner goes in the competitive-looking mile handicap at Windsor, but perhaps a better chance of a winner for Murphy comes in the shape of Love Your Looks (16:15) in a fillies' event over the same trip at Wolverhampton. Love Your Looks is one of the least exposed in today's field after just six career starts (only two of them in handicaps), and she's fairly treated off a BHA mark of 66 judged on either of her last two efforts in 2011, one of which was a win at today's track. There isn't much of a case to be made for several in this afternoon's race (three of them are out of the weights), and even at around [2.88] there's arguably a bit of juice in the price.
Over jumps as well as on the Flat, Warwick is a track where it regularly pays to race prominently and, bearing that in mind, Rod Millman's three-year-old My Boy Ginger shaped very well in making up plenty of ground from rear in a mile handicap there on Bank Holiday Monday. He runs over a furlong further in the 16:45 at Wolverhampton this afternoon and, if he can repeat his Warwick effort, he's unlikely to be far away at the finish. Admittedly, there are a handful of eyecatching handicap debutants in the field, not least Ed Dunlop's Bursting Bubbles, but with solid form already in the book, My Boy Ginger makes plenty of appeal at around [5.6].
Windsor's glut of Flat racing gets underway for the season this afternoon and the course's perennial top trainer Richard Hannon is typically well represented. He's got a couple trading towards the head of the market in the two maidens that open the card, but potentially his most interesting runner of the day is Avonmore Star, who goes in the five-furlong handicap at 17:00. Avonmore Star struggled last season, partly because he wasn't especially well handicapped after a productive two-year-old season, but there was certainly an element of his form tailing off through the season, too. However, Avonmore Star's standout effort in 2011 came on his reappearance, and if he could reproduce that form today then he'd take the world of beating off an official rating of 77. It looks significant that powerful connections are keeping the faith and, with Ryan Moore in the plate, anything around the [6.6] mark looks fair enough.
