Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed his interest in the attacking midfielder Lucas Moura.

When Brazil played Great Britain last week in a friendly lead up to the 2012 Olympics, Lucas Moura showed why he is so highly rated, which has not escaped Premier League team Manchester United's attention...

The current transfer window fashion is to be seen shopping for Brazilian Olympic squad members, with Chelsea the trend setters with their pursuit of Oscar, Neymar and Hulk.

Three days after the (2.57) gold-medal favourites offered an illustration of why they are fancied above even Spain at London 2012 by easing past Stuart Pearce's Great Britain 2-0, Manchester United have made it clear that they too can understand the hype.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed his interest in the attacking midfielder Lucas Moura, who came off the bench in the game at the Riverside Stadium and was hugely impressivein a wide role, but denied agreeing a £26 million fee with his club Sao Paulo.

He said: "It's not correct. We haven't reached an agreement for the player. We've shown an interest but until such time as we get a deal agreed we can't say he's our player."

The news comes within days of Ferguson admitting that the Red Devils had submitted a bid for unsettled Arsenal captain Robin van Persie as they search for further additions, having already bought Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Shinji Kagawa and Crewe youngster Nick Powell.

Manchester United's ambition and investment has gone some way to disproving the popular theory in May after Manchester City beat them to the Premier League on goal difference, which was that the latter's greater resources would enable them to pull clear over the coming campaigns.

Instead, Roberto Mancini's side are yet to enhance their title-winning squad and though they justifiably remain (2.30) favourites to stay on top, they haven't completely blown away their neighbours, who are second in line at (3.5).

There has only been one instance in the last 28 years of a team besides Manchester United finishing first in successive seasons, and Ferguson has promised further signings to help prevent their city rivals becoming the second.
