Phoenix must lift at home

Sydney were unbeaten in four games until they lost 3-2 to the Mariners last weekend.

Wellington fans won't be happy to see Sydney FC arrive at Westpac Stadium on Sunday, and Andy Morris is fairly sure they will remain so until the Phoenix win at home again and beat the hoodoo.

The Sky Blues have something of a stranglehold on these meetings, winning eight of the 13 games, including a 2-0 win when they most recently met late last season.

Signs are that this might be a season of transition for the Phoenix, and probably coach Ricki Herbert accepts that. The Kiwis have only won once after failing to beat Adelaide at home last weekend.

Wellington will be looking to English striker Paul Ifill to make a big impact if, as expected, he starts this one. He was available against United last week after recovering from a groin injury, but Herbert was only prepared to risk him as a substitute. Even so, he set up the equaliser with his cross.

Shannon Cole was impressive off the bench against the Mariners last weekend and could force his way into the Sydney starting line-up.

In previous years, Wellington have enjoyed a good home record. This is the time when they need to psychologically rebuild the Westpac into a fortress.
