Caulfield cup day

Livia is selected in the filly race over 2000m from a pair of daughters of Zabeel, namely Zapurb and Absolute Joy, while the West Australian raider Bridgestone is noted in the G3 AAMI Norman Robinson (2000m).
Glam Slam can win the last race on the card for fillies and mares fresh up from a wide draw and be part of a great Caulfield Cup Day day again for trainer Danny O'Brien.
Race Three
LIVIA is bred to run a middle distance and further being by the stamina sire Galileo and the filly relishes ground with some cut in it, so no concerns about the weather playing party pooper at Caulfield on Cup Day.
This filly has that size and powerful late closing ability that screams the G1 Crown Oaks (2500m) is her next step, after this 2000m event (Race Three) at Caulfield on Saturday.
Her last start surge down the outer late for fourth in the G2 Edward Manifold (1600m), along with the fact her sire is leaving sizable stayers, has almost certainly convinced trainer David Hayes to plot an Oaks course.
My one slight concern would be Livia is having her first look at Caulfield here but just keep in mind the Oaks is run at Flemington, if things do not quite pan out as expected.
The stable of David Hayes this week looks almost like a weight has been lifted from it and his runners can nab a couple at Caulfield at least on Saturday and I expect him to be a major player again over Cup week (especially Oaks and Emirates Day).
ZAPURB in the same race would enjoy some cushion at Caulfield and being by Zabeel, you know she will stay the 2000m here with ease.
Her sister Zapurple, which won at G3 over 2500m, showed this family was stamina orientated and could handle racing if required.
The last start seventh over 1800m in the Listed UCI Stakes by Zapurb was not too bad an effort for mine, as she ran into some serious Victoria Derby male chances and this is a major drop in horsepower here back to just her own sex.
Glen Boss, who must have a sore shoulder this week after so many fist-pumping celebrations out of the saddle over the line in feature races, retains the ride on this filly and that is a good sign.
The fresh up win this season by Zapurb came on slow footing and over a nice debutant, also by Zabeel, called Downes and it goes pretty good for any speculators out there wanting to note down a young male staying prospect.
I should add in that maiden win by Zapurb the third placed finisher was Tee Emar, which since that effort has placed behind Don Jose (second and third next two starts behind the Derby prospect Spacecraft) then won a maiden easily before last start finishing second at Listed level.
ABSOLUTE JOY is another by Zabeel in the field and she will start to shine now at a trip that allows her breeding to kick in.
Two starts back she struck her stablemate Zaleba (also by Zabeel), which has since won again, and last start she finished second to King Diamond and that looks good now that gelding just failed last start to beat Spacecraft.
Race Four
BRIDGESTONE may be the tread your car runs on but this staying colt from Western Australia could puncture a few reputations in the G3 AAMI Norman Robinson (2000m).
I do think it is the roomy track at Flemington and the 2500m of the G1 Victoria Derby that will see the real four on the floor but Bridgestone is worth a play at double figures here and maybe all up into his main target to inflate the return.
He is by Pentire and most of them are stayers, while his dam is a Gold Brose mare and that spells sprinter and able to cope on rain-affected ground.
However this colt, which cost 200K, as the distances go up and the more racing he has just seems to perform better like a stayer on the rise.
Five years ago a young stayer called Plastered came from the West and won the G2 AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day then took out the G1 Victoria Derby (2500m) a week later.
Bridgestone won the same 1650m event last start, as Plastered did on his way to dual Melbourne success, so can the West roar again?
Race Ten
GLAM SLAM fresh up can make light of a wide gate, as this mare is very forward and the in-form Dan Nikolic will ride.
This mare has only ever failed once in eight starts to pay a dividend and that was a not far away fourth at G3 level at the line.
She races well fresh and has two tactical options, with super early pace to get across and control the race either in front or outside the pace, but she is also capable of sitting with cover poised then being let rip the closing 250m.
Glam Slam may be part of a great day for the Danny O'Brien stable, even though they seemed to have saved the carpark barrier draws for his two Caulfield Cup runners and this mare.
