Putting has long been Ames' Achilles heel, so it was highly encouraging to see that he topped the putts per round stats.
Two proven performers on the world stage can boost themselves up the money list with a strong showing at the Frys.com Open, denying Tiger Woods and helping us to a handy profit, offers Paul Krishnamurty.
This week's golf headlines concern the return to action of Tiger Woods, who makes his Fall Series debut in the Frys.com Open, but if the previous event history is any guide, punters should steer well clear of backing the favourite at single-figure odds. The last three winners of this event - Rocco Mediate, Troy Matteson and Cameron Beckman - all started as triple-figured outsiders. At least some common ground can be found in the fact that, like Woods, all three were in the thick of the end of season money list battle to retain their cards.
Mediate's victory proves that age is no barrier to success around CordeValle GC, and my two picks both fall into the same category of "yesterday's men". Both are former TPC Sawgrass champions, both are the wrong side of the money-list cut-line in 131st and 145th place respectively.
Stephen Ames, a [100.0] chance, was mentioned in last week's 'Five to follow during the Fall Series' piece, and the Canadian took the eye with a markedly improved performance in Nevada, closing with 67/65/67 for a top-25 finish. Putting has long been Ames' Achilles heel, so it was highly encouraging to see that he topped the putts per round stats. There could be better to come, as CordeValle tends to reward the most accurate drivers and the hottest putters.
David Duval also caught the eye at the weekend, making a stack of birdies and finishing closer to contention than the bare figures of a 23rd place finish suggests. A [130.0] chance here, Duval left the strong impression that he was going to fight tooth and nail for every dollar throughout the next month, and should be confident after finishing sixth at CordeValle last year.
Granted there has been precious little to recommend since, but the former world number one has shown before that he retains enough ability to suddenly improve. There cannot have been a tipster on earth who backed Duval before he finished second in the 2009 US Open, or for that matter when he was runner-up in the 2010 Bob Hope Invitational.
The trading advice is to lay out four units, and then place two orders on both men to bank a minimum of six units profit at [10.0] and [3.0].
