The drama wasn't just confined to the pitch -- Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes came out of retirement to make the United match-day squad and played the last half hour in place of Nani.
No one, including Joe Dyer, expected to see the return from retirement of Paul Scholes, but he's back at a perfect time with a revenge win by United over City in their bid for the FA Cup.
United gained a little redemption over City with a 3-2 victory at the Etihad.
The win means United depose City as FA Cup favourites at [5.0].
An early red card for City captain Vincent Kompany gave United the incentive to attack and they grabbed it with both hands, opening up a 3-0 halftime lead.
The drama wasn't just confined to the pitch -- Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes came out of retirement to make the United match-day squad and played the last half hour in place of Nani. Unsurprisingly perhaps, the 37-year-old looked off the pace and made more mistakes than we usually associate with him.
On the pitch, Wayne Rooney opened the scoring with a looping header over City reserve keeper Costel Pantilimon on 10 minutes. The lead was doubled 20 minutes later when Danny Wellbeck smashed a crisp volley past Pantilimon to send the visiting fans into raptures.
And when Rooney crunched a header from his own saved penalty to make it 3-0 the mocking chants could be heard in London!
Somehow the second 45 minutes were even more dramatic than the first. Aleksandar Kolarov put the frighteners on United with a deliciously placed free kick on 48 minutes and the free-running Sergio Aguero got City to within one goal when scoring on midway through the second-half.
By that point Scholes was on the pitch and he was, in part, responsible for the second goal, giving away possession to allow James Milner the chance to set up Aguero. Another United old boy, Owen Hargreaves, even got some game time, though in his case in the blue shirt.
Chances came at both ends thereafter with City making light of their one man disadvantage. Kolarov came very close with an injury time free kick and Anders Lindegaard had his nervy moments.
But United held firm, and on the final whistle the entire stadium applauded in recognition of a fantastic game.
