The Czech ace has, on the surface, come through largely unscathed so far.
While on the surface Thomas Berdych looks like he has cruised through to the Australian Open quarter-finals, Andy Morris can't see him going much further without digging a lot deeper...
Tomas Berdych, seventh seed in the Australian Open, has rarely had much success in Melbourne, so he will be extra keen to take another step forward on Tuesday.
Berdych had never reached the quarter-finals in seven tries until last year, which contrasts with his success in the French Open -- where he was a semi-finalist two years ago -- and Wimbledon, where he lost in the final the same year.
The Czech ace has, on the surface, come through largely unscathed so far. He has dropped just two sets, to 10th seed Nicolas Almagro in the fourth round.
But in reality he has had some struggles. He needed tie-breaks to win two sets against 30th seed Kevin Anderson, and all his sets against Spaniard Almagro went right to the wire.
That doesn't look good when you compare his progress to that of Rafael Nadal, who stands in his way of reaching the last four.
Nadal has only faced one seed so far, compatriot and 18th seed Feliciano Lopez in the fourth round, but he has not even looked remotely like dropping a set along the way.
Every year since 2007, he has at least made the quarter-finals, but that's as far as he has gone in the past two years since his 2009 win, and you get the sense that he hasn't hit top gear yet.
There will be plenty of smart money on the Spaniard to still be standing after today.
