Fremantle moved into the top three after defeating Carlton by nine points, 14.12 (96) to 12.15 (87), putting an end to successive losses in its previous two games.
Trailing by 26-points at the end of the third quarter, the Blues produced a late flurry to threaten the Dockers' lead, but the Dockers were able to see the game out.
The Western Bulldogs thrashed West Coast, posting an impressive 60-point win.
The Bulldogs enjoyed the freedom of being in front early, establishing a 23-point lead at the final change, before a spell of six goals in the final quarter saw that margin increase as the Bulldogs cruised to their eighth win of the season - 17.17 (119) to 9.5 (59).
Hawthorn continued its magnificent turnaround by scoring a sixth consecutive win with a hard fought 14.18 (102) to 13.8 (86) victory over Essendon.
In a free scoring match, the Hawks led by 29-points at one stage only to see their lead evaporate as the Bombers tied the scores midway through the last quarter. Despite this turnaround, the brilliance of Buddy Franklin and a sealing goal from Michael Osborne saw the Hawks close out the game and edge closer to finals contention.
Bottom side Richmond notched up its third victory of the season with a 15.15 (105) to 12.14 (86) success over the disappointing Brisbane Lions.
In what should have been a celebratory 200th game for 2009 recruit Brendan Fevola, defeat saw the Lions' finals hopes further frustrated, while the Tigers first back-to-back victory in some time sees them level with both Adelaide and West Coast and a question mark over who will take out the wooden spoon in 2010.
Port Adelaide slipped to a sixth consecutive defeat at the hands of North Melbourne, as the Kangaroos stretched their winning run to three and Port endured its worst ever losing streak.
The Kangaroos were rarely troubled as they led at every change, ending the game with a 19.15 (129) to 14.9 (93) victory.
